The IB Primary Years Programme (PYP)

The IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) is a curriculum framework used in grades 1-5 and focuses on developing internationally minded, lifelong learners, both in the classroom and in the world outside.

The goal of adopting the IB PYP framework is to create a transdisciplinary curriculum that is engaging, relevant, challenging and significant for our studentsThrough inquiry-based learning, students explore six transdisciplinary themes of global significance.

Students use knowledge and skills derived from six subject areas as building blocks to create connections to the world around them and develop an understanding of broader, conceptual understandings.

The KFS curriculum plan follows these six transdisciplinary themes in the creation of our Programme of Inquiry as outlined by the IB PYP Programme:

 

The IB Middle Years Programme (MYP)

Korea Foreign School is an authorized IB World School for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme.

The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end, the organization works with schools, governments, and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

The MYP is a specially designed program developed by the International Baccalaureate organization to prepare students to be successful in the Diploma Program. The MYP focuses on students from ages 11-16 (grades 6-10) and culminates with a Personal Project. The Personal Projects demonstrate readiness to enter the Diploma Programme. The philosophical basis of the MYP fosters the traits of a responsible global citizen through the IB Learner Profile.

The MYP consists of eight subject groups, which allows for a comprehensive and balanced curriculum. Students learn through global contexts, which allows them to connect their own lives and experiences to the real world. The MYP is a conceptual based program and these ‘big ideas’ allow the student to be engaged and inquire within the different subject areas. Throughout the programme students develop their social, thinking, research, communication and self-management skills (called Approaches to Learning or ATL’s) in which they are essentially learning how to learn. In addition, there is a Community and Service component, called Action as Service, where students extend their learning outside the classroom and can have a positive impact on the lives of others as well as the environment by taking part in service projects. At the heart of the programme is the IB Learner Profile, which consists of 10 attributes that we strive for all of our students to possess.

PHILOSOPHY

Korea Foreign School is acutely aware that we now live in a Global society and this school has been founded in order to cater to students of all backgrounds, races, and religions. In this way children learn to belong to the family of the world, to love and respect each other’s differences and celebrate them. The school is non-profit making and our aim is to make an international education available to as many students as possible. Every child will have her/his ethnicity, race, religion and cultural beliefs recognized by the school whether it is in the classroom, at an assembly or on the sports field. The wide-ranging curricular and extra-curricular activities mean they have the opportunity to follow their desired path to appropriate secondary institutions. The purpose of the school is to help students aim high in all aspects of learning while retaining their curiosity and creativity. They will learn to have empathy with others and reflect on their own values and the values of others. This will enable them to lead in businesses or universities worldwide while retaining their curiosity and creativity. This will enable them to lead and succeed in the career of their choice.
